Henry Ford is widely acknowledged for creating the production line that revolutionised the automobile industry, bringing cars within financial reach of the common man.

However, Ford’s autobiography states that he borrowed the idea from the “disassembly” lines used by Armour for processing meat.

He then called upon Frederick Taylor, the creator of “scientific management,” to do time and motion studies on his assembly lines.

How does a car maker like Ford come across the innovations of a meat processing plant and then take the next step of identifying that their innovations would have benefits within his own field?

It is through the use of analogies / innovations from other fields that the next big innovations in telecommunications and OSS will be derived? How broad is your reading material?
