Digital innovation practices

Gartner’s 2016 CIO Survey revealed five key innovation practices that deliver the highest improvement in digital performance: Crowdsourcing, Different metrics, Formal innovation management and work with Startups. I suspect these CIO findings are also mirrored in the OSS industry. How many OSS organisations do you know that are making use of:

  1. Crowdsourcing,
  2. Different metrics,
  3. (Different funding),
  4. Formal innovation management and
  5. Work with Startups

Item 2 gets a tick because generating different metrics is pretty much why OSS are used.

Crowdsourcing is possibly for testing but there are many other possible use cases (including the small-grid OSS I’ve mentioned recently).

Innovation management has definitely been used at the OSS places I’ve worked, but more out of necessity than as the competitive advantage that it could be.

The current large-grid approach to OSS doesn’t really lend itself to leveraging the speed and innovation of startups but the dynamically flexible environment that OSS works within makes it prime for tapping into startup thinking.
