If you’re an OSS developer, it’s easy to see all your work as high art. And in many cases it is. There is an amazing sense of achievement to build something so powerful.

Unfortunately for OSS chefs, the customer doesn’t care much for the art but just wants a tool to help them eat through their workload, helping to improve the efficiency of their tasks.

I have huge admiration for the developers who build OSS tools to handle the complex situations experienced by CSPs. But as an integrator, if the product developer needs to walk you through their code to understand how to configure the data or use the application you know that their product is too complex.

The real masterpieces of OSS are profound in their simplicity, efficiency and their intuitive interfaces.
