In my opinion it is important to strive to be a tripod if you’re in the OSS industry. It’s vitally important to be competent with Telco networks, IT technologies and understanding business drivers.

However, a majority of OSS experts prefer to specialise in only one or maybe two prongs of the tripod.

To me, that is akin to a tennis player who has a fantastic serve but is unable to play any other shot with competence. It might make you successful up to a certain level but then you’ll be found wanting. Then if you can develop a serve and a forehand, you’ll get to the next level but then be found wanting. If you want to make it to the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour then you must be efficient at all aspects of the game.
