In the grand scheme of OSS and all its constituent pieces, no one person knows very much at all.
That’s why we have to build learning (and teaching) into everything we do in OSS, as individuals, as organisations and as products. It’s for this reason that I’m such a believer that analytics and learning management systems (LMS) have a huge role to play in the OSS of the future.
Despite sounding like a contradiction, some of the smartest people I’ve known in OSS are actually the worst learners. They know they’re brilliant and they’re right. They know far more than most OSS exponents ever will, which makes it harder for them to acknowledge that they don’t already know everything.
Analytics and LMS don’t have this frailty. The learning feedback loop is built into them.
Many pieces of the better decision feedback loop (see below for diagram) already exist in the world of OSS. It’s our task to make them even better.
