Carlos Slim buys from Opmantek

Small Gold Coast outfit Opmantek beats software giants for major telco deal

Gold Coast-based IT company Opmantek Software has landed another seven-figure deal with a major Latin American telco, beating out the world’s biggest software giants to secure the business. The contract with a telco in Ecuador will see Opmantek’s software used by an estimated 40 per cent of Latin America’s population, excluding Brazil – about 160 million people.

The deal is understood to be with an arm of the American Movil group, owned by telecom billionaire Carlos Slim. The Mexican last year was pipped for the title of world’s richest man by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

The Ecuadorean deal comes on the back of Opmantek in early 2012 stitching up a multimillion-dollar contract with Telmex, Mexico’s largest telecommunications provider, also owned by Mr Slim.

Opmantek CEO Danny Mr Maher said the expansion into the Latin American market was the equivalent of securing business with every telecommunications provider in Australia, plus the National Broadband Network, 10 times over.
