Crossing the OSS tech chasm

When discussing yesterday’s post about increasing feedback loops in OSS, the technology gap on exponential technologies such as IoT, network virtualisation and machine learning reminded me of Geoffrey Moore’s “Crossing the Chasm” as shown in the graph below.

In the context of the abovementioned technologies, the chasm isn’t represented by the adoption of a product (as per Moore’s graph) but in the level of sophistication required to move to future iterations. [Noting that the sophistication chasm may also effect the take-up rate, as the OSS vendors that can cross the chasm to utilising more advanced machine learning, robotics and automation will have a distinct competitive advantage].

This gets back to the argument towards developing these exponential technologies, even if only by investing in the measure and feedback steps in the control loop initially.
