HeavyReading on SDN and NFV

Software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) create new management challenges that can’t be addressed with current operations support systems (OSSs). SDN and particularly NFV – which is emerging as the larger, “umbrella” concept – are therefore encouraging new companies, with new network management approaches, to enter the market, while causing established players to reconsider their OSS approaches, systems and entire architectures,”
According to a major new report from Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com), the research division of Light Reading (www.lightreading.com).

As we’ve been reporting on this blog, SDN and NFV is likely to have fundamental impacts on next generation network management and OSS toolsets.

This report has a few interesting insights:

  • It provides a list of 24 companies developing SDN/NFV management solutions
  • Typically it includes network equipment vendors rather than the OSS vendors because it is the networks where most focus currently is and they realise they’ll need tools to manage their solutions. This means vendors with different perspectives are investing in an entrance to the OSS provider space
  • Three unique approaches seem to be appearing, including lightweight / abstraction models like we’ve discussed here
  • Many vendors with different approaches equals an even more fragmented OSS market than we already have
