OctopOSS Abandonment

Go oft to the house of thy friend, for weeds choke the unused path.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

As an OSS consultant, it sometimes* saddens me to see powerful OSS systems being abandoned by organisations who have invested so much, but are now unable or unwilling to make use of their systems. There are so many reasons why the weeds may have grown around each OctopOSS – lack of relevance, lack of user operation capabilities, data integrity issues making the system unusable, corporate buy-outs where the acquirer jetisons the acquired systems, etc.

But the ultimate reason always seems to be that the vendor didn’t provide the customer with enough support to ensure the system remained useful and valuable.

In the world of upper tier telcos, there are so few potential customers for your OSS products that it can hardly be an excuse of too many paths to maintain.

* Note that there are also situations where it makes great sense to abandon systems as a means of simplifying the overall solution. Regular pruning is essential. The message to the vendor still remains true though – remain relevant to your customers.
