Umbrella Network and Service Assurance. Done right.
Our flagship umbrella OSS software product, UMBOSS, provides the unified management of your telecom network, hybrid data center, and cloud and network infrastructure across domains.
If your goal is to manage your OSS better by reducing costs and simplifying operations, while evolving into a service and customer centric operator, UMBOSS gets the job done, right.
Based on our strong expertise in the telecom industry, we support your needs by using our best practices and designing solutions compliant with industry standards.
UMBOSS is modular, vendor-independent, and tested in network and service monitoring, NOC/SOC operations, analytics, and planning. It is designed to unify fault, performance, and inventory management across network, data center, and other domains. UMBOSS addresses a typical situation that most telecoms and IT organizations face: several domains (e.g., IP/MPLS core/mobile backhaul network, DWDM/SDH transport network, IMS, DC, FTTH, Mobile network), each managed by a separate EMS or data collector. Sometimes there isn’t even a collector/EMS.
The primary purpose of UMBOSS is to consolidate all the events and performance data into single consolidated event and performance data streams. The consolidated data is further processed in UMBOSS’s Event & Fault and Performance Management modules. This provides great benefits as events are centrally filtered and converted into alarms. Cross-domain alarm correlations become possible and unified threshold levels can be set and trigger alarms.
All the modules are genuine software units produced by UMBOSS. Even though they may be acquired and installed independently, they are natively integrated and share the common data model. The following is a short description of each module’s roles and functions.
The UMBOSS Event and Fault Management (EFM) module and UMBOSS Performance Management (PM) module aggregate all the event and performance data from different sources and perform normalization of the data received. All the data is enriched with external information from inventory, CRM, ERP, billing, ticketing, and other relevant data available in a customer’s OSS or IT landscape.
UMBOSS EFM performs filtering of alarms, deduplication, advanced alarm correlation and root cause analysis based on alarms and enriched data.
Performance data is used to calculate different KPIs and detect threshold violations to trigger alarms. Different prediction and anomaly calculations are performed to provide advanced network health status information.
The monitoring of resources with fault and performance management heavily relies on precise and correct information available in resource inventory. In order to provide correct and updated information on devices and topologies, UMBOSS provides the Automatic Discovery and Reconciliation Management (ADM) module. It discovers all the details of active equipment and network topologies on different layers such as BGP, OSPF, L2, IS-IS, and many more.
Data discovered by UMBOSS ADM can be stored in the UMBOSS Network Device Management (NDM) module or resource inventory that is already in place.
UMBOSS also provides a device Configuration Management (CM) module as well. UMBOSS Address Book (AB) is a module used by clients that need a place to store information on locations, contacts, and customer information, among other data. When used in a telecom environment, it can act as a mini-CRM system.
The UMBOSS Reporting module provides consolidated reporting across all the data available to UMBOSS. Reports can be generated ad-hoc or scheduled. This component embeds TIBCO JasperReport technology to allow state-of-the-art reporting functionality to network/IT engineers.
The UMBOSS Service Quality Management (SQM) module is used for service-level alarming. Service modeling is performed using Service Modeler. Service Quality Manager performs complex calculations of KQIs based on alarms and performance data and detects service degradations and outages. Engineers can react promptly to service degradations and pinpoint technical issues.
Finally, all the data is presented to NOC or SOC engineers through the UMBOSS Portal. It is a single pane of glass that provides a unified view over customers, locations, services, devices, and their health and performance.
The Portal contains an advanced manipulation layer. It uses TM Forum aligned APIs to fetch data from external OSS and BSS systems. The Portal combines them to provide various search results over different domains. To connect to external non-TM Forum compliant APIs, Integration Point Adapters (IPAs) are used to develop specific integration logic. NOC and SOC engineers use the Portal to easily navigate through the network, services, and customers, access alarms and performance data, visualize network health and access different reports.
