“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”
Henry Adams.
Here on PAOSS, we’ve spoken before about the challenges of training (and retaining) a broadly talented, adaptable OSS workforce. Getting a resource up to productive speed on any given OSS requires an apprenticeship, not just a 2 day training course.
But this process can be accelerated if you have a workforce that has the time and interest to mentor and train the rest of the team around them.
Have you ever taken the time to observe who within your workforce are teachers by nature, the ones who take the time to invest in others without being prompted? I don’t have the stats to back this up, but my guess is that roughly 1 in 10 people in ICT are predisposed to taking on the role of teacher.
Seek these people out no matter where they reside within your organisation. Look for them when hiring. Give them the time and the tools that will allow them to up-skill your entire team. The more teachers on your staff, the greater the compounding effect of education.
In an OSS organisation your staff represent your biggest potential competitive advantage.
