Ericsson and Mediatek (a chipset vendor) support growing the Wi-Fi calling device eco-system with more commercial chipsets tested towards mobile networks. This grows the device ecosystem with more commercial Wi-Fi calling enabled smartphone brands and models for more markets. Operators in markets that do not have high penetration of high-end smartphones can now get hold of other phones that support Wi-Fi calling so they can launch the service on these types of markets.
Ericsson and MediaTek have concluded Wi-Fi calling interworking between the Ericsson network infrastructure (Ericsson Evolved Packet Core and Ericsson IP Multimedia Subsystem) and MediaTek’s chipsets, so that Wi-Fi calling will work seamlessly over mobile networks. Wi-Fi calling enables a simple and cost efficient way to extend operator voice coverage. It could also be used to allow more affordable ways to communicate when traveling abroad. With Wi-Fi calling for multi-device, operators can extend voice services to smartphones, tablets, computers and other personal devices.
