Anne M. Mulcahy.

All great employees are effectively free because they add more value than what they cost.

This is especially true in OctopOSS land. Whether you’re an OSS vendor or a CSP, I would hazard a guess that the Pareto Principle applies to your staff. Do 20% of your staff provide 80% of your most valuable outcomes?

They are the rainmakers who make most of the sales, the engineers who provide most of the innovation, the project guys who always deliver, the architects who truly comprehend then interpret the organisation’s needs, the network operators who diagnose the alarm storms. They are your competitive advantage.

In OSS organisations, the value-add difference between the linchpins and the median employees is more pronounced than in any other field I’ve worked in.

Who are your linchpins and what makes them so special? How do you identify and replicate some of what they deliver for you?*
You could probably pay them ten times what you currently do and yet they’d still be free.

* Note: If you’re just starting out in OSS and want to become a linchpin, you could ask yourself these same questions
