Go to the source

The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge.”
Thomas Berger

Source data is often the bane of the data migrator. We go to all lengths to manipulate, cleanse, create and otherwise fix errors in the data.

But sometimes it’s simpler than that. Sometimes we have the opportunity of going to the source and fixing the data there before it gets handed to you.

For example, the source system may have flexibility in the format that it exports the data and with quick collaboration with the owners of the source systems, together you may be able to overcome many of your problems.

In another example, you may actually want the discrepancies you identify to be remedied in the source data so that you don’t get problem data repeatedly.

In yet a third example, you may be able to populate additional information into the source system (eg linking keys) that make your life so much easier.

It can’t hurt to ask.
