There is so much information required to build an OSS and usually not enough time to collect it. Many OSS exponents have discovered the virtues of speculation particularly when it comes to what the end users want or need. It seems that some people are lauded for their ability to speculate and extrapolate. In other words, to guess.
I have a slightly different perspective. The best in our business are the ones who are able to get closest to the users / customers and ask questions that discover the answer, particularly with enlightening questions that the questionee never even realised they had an answer for previously.
