OSS design…determined by users

The design not only determines uses, it’s also determined by users.”

Designing an OSS, or updating the design of an existing one, can be challenging for the reason that user experience is so subjective. You think your design is practical, intuitive, elegant and simple, but others may have a vastly different opinion. I can state this from personal experience as a designer!

For me, the quote above is powerful in its implication of a feedback loop.

The design is not only determined by the designer, but the users who interact with it. ergo, if you’re not closely observing how users interact with your design, then you only have a partial understanding of it. If you take the time to gather a more complete perspective of your design, more importantly, is your mind open to change?
